The children are 3, 11 and 13 years old, Police Department. David Brown told reporters. All three were in serious condition. The other victims ranged in age from 31 to 56, police said.
The shooting happened around 9 p.m. as some gathered in the 2700 block of West Flournoy Street for a vigil and others were out for Halloween, police said. It was not known who the vigil was for.
“It was over by three seconds,” Brown said outside Stroger Hospital, where many of the injured were taken. “The car pulls out after driving and randomly shoots into the crowd.
“We have no motive,” he said, adding that officers believe there were two shooters.
“We’re always concerned about retaliation obviously, but we don’t know enough about it, whether it’s a gang conflict or a personal conflict, but once we know we’ll share that with the public,” Brown said. “And obviously we’re deploying additional police resources to the area to make sure we can prevent any retaliation if that’s something that’s real.”
All the victims were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from critical to non-life threatening, police said. According to police, a 37-year-old man and a 48-year-old man are in critical condition. Most of the injured were taken to Stroger Hospital.
