The 11 incidents occurred between Sunday, May 15, 2022 and Thursday, May 26, 2022, with “10 car robberies and one related retail robbery,” according to a press release issued on June 8. Police say that during the car robberies, a male suspect with a pistol asked for the keys of the victim’s car, while “at least one other male suspect” was waiting in the wings near an escape car. The couple reportedly managed to steal five vehicles and when they managed to get the victim’s car, they left the crime scene with this stolen vehicle. During the retail robbery, police say the couple “entered the scene while pointing a pistol at officers and demanding cash and fireworks.” The suspect with the pistol took the cash and then allegedly forced the employees of the store to load the stolen fireworks in the escape car, which was waiting outside with another male suspect. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. However, Inspector Richard Harris acknowledged in a press conference that “one could only risk speculation about the psychological effects of these robberies on humans.” The Toronto Police Hold Up Team investigated the series of episodes in the so-called Project ZigZag. As a result, they identified the alleged suspects as involved in the crimes and retrieved all the stolen vehicles. 19-year-old Tyliq Jones from Brampton and a 17-year-old boy from Toronto were detained on June 2 in a “high-risk deterrence” and both have been arrested on a long list of offenses. Jones faces 44 charges, while the 17-year-old faces 56 charges.
