According to Ontario Provincial Police, the incident happened near Holt Street in Oshawa around 6:25 a.m.
Investigators say six other people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
“One of the vehicles, this transport truck here, was approaching by slowing or stopping traffic on Highway 401,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said Tuesday in a video on Twitter.
Schmidt said the truck collided with a black vehicle and then “went through the scene bouncing off several other vehicles.”
This black car was hit by a truck during a seven-vehicle crash on the 401 Freeway on Tuesday, police said. (OPP)
The driver of the pickup truck, from Pickering, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Schmidt said the transport truck was full of tires and the trailer is broken, creating challenges for tow trucks trying to clear the area.
Roads in the area are closed while police investigate the incident. Police say it’s still too early to know the cause of the crash, but they don’t believe environmental factors were involved.
Investigators are warning of major congestion in both Bowmanville and Oshawa as a result. Roads are expected to reopen around 1:30 p.m
