Chromebooks are a great way to stay connected and productive while on the go. But if you’re the owner of a Chromebook, there are a few things you can do to make it more difficult for others to access your device. One way is to change the owner on your Chromebook. This can help protect your device from being used by someone who isn’t authorized to have it, or who is trying to damage it in some way. Another way to protect your Chromebook is by disabling administrator rights on it. This will prevent other people from changing settings on it, or even deleting files. If you want to keep your Chromebook safe and secure, be sure to follow these tips:

Users can add their own apps, personalize their Chromebook settings, access their personal files in Google Drive™ and use other features that let them feel like this Chromebook is theirs alone. Users also have separate Chrome Web browser profiles so they don’t accidentally interfere with or change each others’ bookmarks, history, open tabs or saved passwords.

If you’re a Chromebook fleet manager managing multiple Chromebooks at one time: Add users individually only when needed. Effective May 2, 2016 , the group management interface will be removed from Chromebook devices enrolled in K-12 . This interface will be removed from Chromebooks that are in the company signed-in state. Chromebooks that are not in the company signed-in state will continue to have group management capabilities.

Chromebook fleet administrators should use Group Management to add a user or groups of users to Chromebooks.

Apply users’ settings only when needed. Chromebooks remember the last signed-in user and startup with that user’s desktop setttings, such as browser bookmarks and history, tabs open, etc. Chromebooks can also be assigned for K-12 school use in which case Chromebooks will automatically apply all student-specific applications and classroom extensions when students sign in from their Chromebook account.   Chromebooks can continue to be used after a user is removed; however the next time another user signs in, they’ll see any changes made by the previous sign-in session(s). If you want Chromebook devices returned at the end of each school year to have the Chromebooks returned to standard settings, see Reset Chromebooks at End of School Year in Chromebooks for Education .
