It is not known if the man died as a result of the fire, said Nanaimo Assistant Fire Chief Stuart Kenning. The fire was caused by a neighbor who was outside and heard a sound, he said. “They determined it was the smoke alarm across the street,” Kenning said. “They went to investigate, noticed that there was smoke inside and called 911.” When the crews arrived, they were told that someone was probably inside the house. “They came in and found a person in the living room in a hospital bed who was dead,” Kenning said. The man, described as elderly, had mobility problems, he said. The Nanaimo RCMP, the BC Ambulance Service and the BC Medical Examiner’s Office were also found at the scene.
