The truck was engulfed in flames on the A1M between junctions 59 and 58. The driver of the HGV managed to escape the flames without being injured. It is not yet known what caused the fire. The fire was brought under control and at 3.30 in the morning the emergency services were waiting for the recovery of the burned shipwreck from the National Road, which reported at 4.35 p.m. that the road between J57 and J58 had been reopened. It remains closed between J59 and J58. At 4:30 a.m., Inrix Traffic Information Service said: “The A1 (M) Southbound was closed due to recovery operations and previous truck fires between J59 A167 (Aycliffe) and J58 A68 (Burtree). Traffic is working fine. “Closing has been reduced to J58 after overnight stay at the entrance slider.
