One of the most common questions after the end of the RDNA3 event was why AMD didn’t compare the RX 7900 series with the GeForce RTX 40 GPUs. AMD’s Frank Azor (Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions & Marketing) answered this. It confirmed that the RX 7900 series is going to compete with the RTX 4080 series, and since NVIDIA simply didn’t release this card, AMD didn’t have any data to put on the official charts. [Radeon RX 7900 XTX] it’s designed to go against the 4080 and we don’t have benchmark numbers on the 4080. That’s the main reason why you didn’t see any NVIDIA comparisons. […] The $999 card is not a 4090 competitor, which costs 60% more, this is a 4080 competitor. —Frank Azor at PCWorld PCWorld was also interested in learning more about FSR3, AMD’s next-generation upscaling technology. Announced during the RDNA3 exhibition. AMD has confirmed that this technology will be released in 2023, but nothing concrete was mentioned about the timing or GPU support. So another burning question from the community was whether FSR3 would be supported by architectures other than RDNA3. Frank Azor confirmed that AMD wants FSR3 to be supported by more than RDNA3: [AMD FSR3] it’s not a reaction or a quick thing [to DLSS3], it’s absolutely something we’ve been working on for a while. Why is it taking a little longer to come out that you were probably hoping for? The main thing to remember about FSR is the philosophy of FSR, and FSR until now only worked on RDNA2 or RDNA1, but on other generations of AMD graphics cards. They also work on competitor graphics cards. It’s exponentially more difficult than if we made it work on RDNA3. […] We really want to work on more than RDNA3. —Frank Azor at PCWorld Azor goes on to say that supporting an architecture is easy (hint at DLSS3 on RTX 40). But AMD promised with FSR technology to support many architectures and that takes time. The company can’t confirm 100% yet whether the company will be able to fulfill the promise to support more architectures with FSR 3, but they are “trying”.
