And, as is typical for AMD, it’s also trying to undercut its main competitor on pricing. The Radeon RX 7900 XTX will retail for $999, while the RX 7900 XT will cost $899. Both cards will be released on December 13th. That’s much more reasonable than the $1,599 RTX 4090 and $1,199 RTX 4080. These cards aren’t just a simple spec hit. Su says the RDNA 3 is the world’s first chiplet-based GPU, giving it a modular design that can easily be adapted down the line. Currently, these chiplets include a 5nm GPU compute die and a 6nm cache die. It is capable of up to 61 teraflops of computing power (up from a maximum of 23 TFLOPs on the RDNA 2), can handle up to 24 GB of GDDR6 RAM, and consists of 58 billion transistors. AMD Of course, the flagship Radeon RX 7900 XTX has the full 24GB of RAM, while the 7900 XT will come with 20GB. Both cards resemble AMD’s latest generation hardware, albeit with larger fans and a sleeker heatsink design. AMD SVP Sam Naffziger also joked that you won’t need new power cables for these cards — you should be able to fit them into your existing system. When it comes to ray tracing, historically one of AMD’s weak points, the company says the new cards feature a next-generation accelerator with 50 percent more performance per compute unit. They will offer 1.5x more rays in flight, new exclusive instructions and upgraded ray sorting. Hopefully this means we’ll see closer ray tracing parity with NVIDIA cards. Radeon 7000 GPUs also feature AMD’s new Radiance Display Engine, with support for 480Hz 4K gaming and 165Hz 8K performance. (And yes, that last one sounds like a stretch to us too.) So what do these cards look like on paper? In addition to the massive 24GB of GDDR6 RAM, the RX 7900 XTX has 96 compute units running at up to 2.3GHz, all with 355 watts of power. The 7900 XT, meanwhile, has 84 CUs, a 2 GHz clock speed and 300 watts of power consumption, along with 20 GB of GDDR6 memory. AMD has also partnered with companies such as Samsung for the DisplayPort 2.1 display, which is expected to be released early next year. Surprisingly, Samsung offered a juicy tidbit: its new Odyssey Neo G9 display will offer 8K ultra-wide resolution. (The better question is whether one is aiming for 8K gaming at all.) In terms of gaming performance, AMD says the RX 7900 XTX hit 295 fps while playing Apex Legends in 4K and up to 704 fps in Valorant. Given that DisplayPort 1.4’s refresh rate limit is 240 Hz, that’s a lot of performance that today’s monitors don’t even capture. AMD also claims its GPUs see up to 96 fps in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla with Fidelity FX Super Resolution (FSR ). Notably missing, of course, is any comparison to NVIDIA’s RTX 4090. Maybe AMD just didn’t have time to evaluate this card, but it will be interesting to see how competitive the RDNA 3 GPUs will be.
