Hello Hello! HOW ARE WE DOING House of the Dragon fans? I ask because this was an emotional rollercoaster of an episode and I personally am still trying to process everything.
From watching Daemon neatly decapitate Vaemond Velaryon after he dared to call Rhaenyra’s children bastards, to understanding how a single miscommunication between a dying Viserys and Alicent led to the massive battle that followed, a lot of gore happened, so it was easy to miss some clever and important details.
One of them, as @inkbugfic points out on Twitter, is directly related to the symbolism of Viserys’ golden mask, used to cover the ravages of his body from leprosy.
The visor’s face rots to the bone on the side where the tall towers sit and his good eye on the side where the raenyra and the demon and their family sit, delicious symbolism 01:59 am – October 10, 2022 Twitter: @inkbugfic In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Paddy Considine, who plays Viserys House of the Dragonconfirmed that this was the king’s illness.
During the all-important dinner scene in episode 8, where many of the characters were toasting each other in an attempt to honor Viserys’ desire to unite his entire family and make things right, the seat of the Hightowers and Targaryens was very important.
To the left of Viserys, which is the side of his face not covered by the mask, we have Rhaenyra, his firstborn child, as well as his brother, Daemon, and Jacaerys and Lucerys — Rhaenyra’s children. In the House of the Dragon they would be known as Team Black.
Meanwhile, to Viserys’ right, where the mask hides his rotten face, we have the Hightowers, which include Alicent, his wife (the queen), Otto (the hand), as well as Aemond, Aegon and Helaena, who are Alicent’s children. In the House of the Dragon fandom, they are known as Team Green.
As @inkbugfic notes, this is “tasteful symbolism” to portray the history of the Hightowers as presenting a shiny, clean and noble image, when in fact they are rotten to the core.
However, this important detail doesn’t just happen in the dinner scene. Throughout the episode, Rhaenyra appears on the left side of her father, while Alicent is on the right.
Series like Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon they’re known for their Easter eggs, so this is definitely appropriate.
Another Twitter user pointed out that Viserys’ golden mask could be a reference to the Viserys we see Game of Throneswho, if you remember, died after Hal Drago dumped molten gold on him.
@inkbugfic Not to mention his vaguely melted golden face to match his namesake’s death hundreds of years later. 08:40 am – October 10, 2022 Twitter: @scrapsofsnow
Way out! I didn’t even notice those details, so shout out to the fans who did and pointed them out for the rest of us. What other things did you notice this week? House of the Dragon episode?
