According to the official Apple website for iOS 16, the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max smartphones will all receive an upgrade to the Portrait mode of the camera that improves the bokeh effect by adding artificial blur in the foreground as well as in the background. IPhone 13 users will receive a camera upgrade bonus later this year. getty MORE FROM FORBESiPhone Users may want to turn off this new iOS feature by Paul Monckton This will make the Portrait function even more realistic, simulating more accurately the appearance of professional cameras with wide-aperture lenses. Blurring the background of a portrait will make your subject stand out, but a true wide-aperture lens will also blur the extreme foreground. Deliberately blurring objects in the foreground can also serve as a great way to frame the subject in your photo, so in addition to enhanced realism, this new feature will offer new creative possibilities in iPhone photography. Apple’s second upgrade promises similar improvements to video, where Cinematic mode has been adjusted for more accurate depth-of-field effects for profile shooting, as well as around the edges of hair and glasses. It’s great to see Apple offer unexpected quality improvements to the iPhone 13 so close to the release of the iPhone 14. According to Dxomark, the iPhone 13 Pro suffers a bit from depth estimation errors in Portrait mode, mainly highlighting areas around the hair as example of the issue. The new iPhone 14 camera may bring a really special, much-needed upgrade later this year, but iOS 16 will at least allow iPhone 13 owners to mentally add a few points to their camera’s current Dxomark rating.
