New York: India at the United Nations voted in favor of Russia’s draft resolution on “Combating the glorification of Nazism”. Amid heated debate, the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly approved a draft resolution to combat the glorification of Nazism by a recorded vote of 105 in favor, 52 against, and 15 abstentions. The representative of India said that the concept of indigenous peoples was not applicable in the context of the country, adding that he united the consensus on the resolution with that understanding. The committee adopted eight draft resolutions, including Texts on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Privacy in the Digital Age, Condemning the Glory of Nazism. The draft resolutions covered a range of human rights issues, from the right to literacy and the protection of children from sexual exploitation to crime prevention and criminal justice issues, as well as efforts to combat the glorification of Nazism. The draft resolution asked the Assembly to express deep concern about the glorification of the Nazi movement, neo-Nazism and former members of the Waffen SS organization, including the construction of monuments and the holding of public demonstrations glorifying the Nazi past. The representative of the Russian Federation expressed concern about the increase in racist and xenophobic rhetoric, calls for the deportation of migrants and refugees, Islamophobia, Afrophobia and anti-Semitism, the UN said in its statement. Several representatives took the floor to express concerns about Moscow’s attempt to use the pretext of fighting neo-Nazism to justify its brutal war against Ukraine, with Ukraine’s representative claiming that the draft has nothing in common with the original fight against Nazism and neo-Nazism. Echoing his concerns, the UK representative stressed that the resolution is part of Moscow’s attempt to justify its aggression against Ukraine by promoting lies and distorting history. The United States representative called the resolution “a cynical attempt” by Moscow to advance its geopolitical goals by invoking the Holocaust and World War II. In the same spirit, the representative of Australia described the weaponization of the Holocaust and Nazism by Moscow as unacceptable. Meanwhile, several delegates seceded from the amendment, which notes with concern that the Russian Federation is seeking to justify its territorial aggression against Ukraine on the purported basis of eradicating neo-Nazism. Rejecting the amendment as politicizing the issue of eradicating racism by introducing a narrow, country-specific approach, the representative of the Russian Federation said “this is a thematic resolution, not a country resolution”.
