Avian influenza has been reported in the Township of Langley, the third-largest municipality in the Lower Continent to deal with the highly contagious viral infection.

On Wednesday, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed the presence of the virus at a commercial poultry business in Langley Township. The latest outbreak comes after recently reported small-scale outbreaks in Summerland, the Sechelt and the River Peace. This infectious strain of bird flu that is sweeping North America was first reported in BC. on April 13 in the North Okanagan Regional District. Since then, herds in Kelowna, Kootenays, Comox Valley, Okanagan-Similkameen, Richmond and Abbotsford have reported cases. Experts say migratory birds are responsible for the current spread and cases are expected to rise as birds fly north for the summer. The Ministry of Agriculture of BC had ordered commercial poultry companies to move herds indoors. He has also advised other measures, such as reducing human access to poultry flocks and increasing cleanliness and hygiene.
