President Joe Biden appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” for his first online interview in 118 days on Wednesday night.
The president began his first personal appearance on a midnight show discussing gun control efforts with comedian and presenter Jimmy Kimmel. Biden wasted no time in targeting Republicans, saying, “A lot of that is intimidation from the NRA. Look, this is not your father’s Republican Party. This is a MAGA party.”

The president spoke about his recent trip to Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and two teachers were killed at Robb Elementary School.
“I met with every family member of all these children who were killed and the teachers who were killed in Uvalde, Texas,” Biden said. “The stories they told and the pain you could see on their faces.”

Kimmel then asked Biden about the possibility of issuing an executive order on gun control, saying that former President Donald Trump “left them out like candy for Halloween.”
The president replied, “I have issued executive orders within the powers of the presidency so that I can deal with anything that has to do with weapons, possession of weapons … everything that is in my power.”
He went on to accuse Trump of abusing the constitution, saying he did not want to “imitate” his predecessor.
“But what I do not want to do and I am not fancy, I do not want Trump to imitate the abuse of the constitution and constitutional power,” Biden said.
The president then accused Republicans of endangering democracy.
“I am often asked, ‘Republicans do not play square, why do you play square?’ said Biden. “If we do the same as they do, our democracy would literally be in danger. This is not funny!”

Kimmel then told the president he thought Democrats were frustrated because they won the House, Senate and White House and made very little progress on guns, reproduction rights, voting rights and climate change. “Somehow we ‘moved backwards.”
Biden responded by saying that “we have really made some real moves” on climate change. He mentioned the efforts to promote solar and wind energy, as well as electric vehicles.

The president then painted a positive picture of the current economic situation in the United States, despite the fact that Americans are facing high inflation and a spike in gas prices.
“Here we are,” he said. “We have the fastest growing economy in the world. We have 8.6 million new jobs since I took office. The unemployment rate fell to 3.6%. We reduced the deficit last year by $ 320 billion. This year we will reduce it by 1 , $ 7 trillion. “
He acknowledged that inflation was “the catastrophe of our existence” and said he wanted to work to reduce the cost of health care, prescription drugs and childcare.
Biden told Kimmel he had never been so optimistic in his life, saying that American children were the most educated, least prejudiced and brave generation in American history.
BIDEN PASSES MORE THAN 100 DAYS WITHOUT A MEDIA INTERVIEW INTERVIEW: “HIS OPERATORS ARE STONE”
The interview ended with Biden and Kimmel discussing the impending US Supreme Court ruling that could overturn the landmark case of abortion Roe vs. Wade. Biden said he did not believe “the country would support it” if the Supreme Court overturned Rowe, and hinted that there were some executive orders he could use to overturn the outcome. He did not provide further details on possible execution orders.
Biden said that if the Supreme Court rejected Roe v. Wade and the states began to impose abortion restrictions, a “mini-revolution” would ensue. He said many people could vote away from home.
First Lady Jill Biden accompanied the president on filming the show. He was seen in the live studio studio wearing a mask and sitting next to many other members of the Biden family.

Biden’s appearance in “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” comes in the middle of a dangerous period for his presidency. Biden’s acceptance rate fell to 39% by the end of May in an AP-NORC poll, his worst rating since joining the White House. An ABC-IPSOS poll released on Sunday found that only 28% of Americans approve of Biden ‘s handling of inflation and 27% approve of his response to rising gas prices.
An AP poll from the same period last year showed the president had a 63% approval rating, which was 24 points higher than the May 2022 rating.

Ahead of Wednesday’s interview with Kimmel, the president joined NBC’s Lester Holt on Feb. 10 before the Super Bowl, which marked his last major media appearance, almost four months ago. Biden then conducted two more friendly interviews, sitting with historian Heather Cox Richardson and progressive YouTube presenter Brian Tyler Cohen in late February.
