“Democracy is on the ballot and unfortunately, it’s going to lose,” Maher said on his “Real Time” show.
Maher continued: “Everything in America is going to change in a fundamental way” after the “most important election ever.”
He also encouraged his audience to vote for the party that still stands for “preserving democracy”.
“It’s also a waste of breath because anyone who thinks they’re already voting and anyone who needs to know that isn’t watching and nobody in America can be convinced of anything anymore,” he said.
Maher said the public hearings of the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021 riot did not change his mind, despite the committee doing a “masterful” job of making its case.
“Ben Franklin said our country was a ‘democracy if you can keep it.’ Well, we can’t, and unless a miracle happens on Tuesday, we haven’t. “Democracy is on the ballot, and unfortunately, it’s going to lose,” Maher said. “And once it’s gone, it’s gone.”
Republicans appear poised to regain control of the House in the midterm elections and have a chance to regain a majority in the Senate. GOP candidates in races across the country have closed electoral gaps with their Democratic rivals and in some cases taken or widened leads in recent weeks.
Maher argued that once Republicans regain control of Congress, they will begin impeaching President Biden and “will never stop.” He said he would be blamed for overseeing the failed withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, support for Ukraine, inflation, the recession and “falling off his bike”.
Many ultra-conservative members of Congress and candidates have called for impeaching Biden on issues such as the economy and border security, but House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) downplayed the possibility of the GOP doing so.
Maher said Biden will be “handicapped” when he runs against former President Trump, who is expected to announce a third White House for the 2024 election cycle in a few weeks.
Maher said that even if Trump loses, he will “show up” at the 2025 inauguration and have an “army of election naysayers” behind him who will be elected in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

The host pointed to a large number of Republican candidates running in this midterm cycle who support Trump’s baseless claims that he was robbed of the 2020 presidential election. Maher said those candidates, once elected to office, will write the rules for how the votes will be counted in 2024.
He also blamed Tim Michels, the GOP gubernatorial candidate in Wisconsin, for comments he made about the upcoming election.
“This is really the moment of crossing the Rubicon, when the election deniers are elected, which is often how countries slide into authoritarianism,” Maher said. “Not by tanks in the streets, but by the elected who have no intention of ever giving it back.”
