The bomb attack at an immigration processing center in Dover was motivated by a far-right terrorist ideology, police said. Andrew Leak, 66, from High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, is believed to have killed himself at a nearby petrol station after throwing two or three “crude” incendiary devices at the Western Jet Foil site in Kent last Sunday. Counter-Terrorism Police South East (CTPSE) declared the attack a terrorist incident after discovering new evidence. A man threw three bombs at the immigration center in Kent last Sunday (Reuters) “Several key witnesses have been spoken to during the course of the investigation and some items of interest have been recovered, including digital media devices,” a statement said. “Evidence from the review of this evidence indicates that there was a far-right motive behind the attack.” Police said there was no evidence Leak was working with anyone else and there was no wider threat to the public. Tim Jacques, senior national co-ordinator for counter-terrorism policing, said: “This was clearly a very worrying incident and although no one was seriously injured, two people suffered minor injuries. A man was caught on camera throwing devices from a car before driving away (Reuters) Members of the army and the British Border Force put out a fire from one of the petrol bombs (Reuters) “Increasingly in counter-terrorism cases, across all ideologies, we’re seeing people who have mental health concerns and a mindset of hate. “Assessing when this crosses the line into terrorism is a complex process and needs to be carefully considered on a case-by-case basis. These decisions must be determined by the facts, so far as they can be ascertained at any given time. “Having considered the evidence gathered so far in this case, while there are strong indications that mental health was likely a factor, I am satisfied that the suspect’s actions were primarily motivated by an extremist ideology. This meets the threshold for a terrorist incident.” Home Secretary Suella Braverman has faced criticism for her handling of the immigration crisis (EPA) Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper tweeted: “Very serious that far right extremism led this attack. “I remain concerned that it has taken so long for counter-terrorism police to take up this case – something I asked the Home Secretary to continue on Monday. “There must be maximum vigilance for possible terrorist or extremist attacks.” Two members of staff suffered minor injuries inside the Western Jet Foil premises after police were called at 11.22am last Sunday. Facebook posts on a now-deleted account called Andy Leak from High Wycombe contain anti-Muslim sentiment and complaints about people claiming benefits if they don’t speak English. Ms Braverman during a visit to the immigration processing center in Dover after the attack (PA) One, shared on August 9, said: “Next time the jobcentre penalizes you for not looking for enough work, ask them about the thousands of people on benefits who can’t speak English and can’t write English . how are they looking for a job? “Unemployment benefits make it clear that you cannot claim benefits if you are not looking for work. all such persons should be excluded from benefits. “Obviously you can’t look for work if you can’t read English or speak English. they break the law. time to get up.” Following the incident, 700 people were taken to Manston Asylum Processing Center near Ramsgate for safety reasons. Police said the investigation is ongoing, including work being carried out on behalf of the coroner.
