Lisa Nandy, the shadow secretary who raises the bar, has questioned whether the policy will work because there is “no indication” that lenders have signed the idea. Speaking to Sky News, he said: “First of all, it’s a good idea to try to get more people home safe, especially people in the benefits system. “The problem is that, as always, the government has not thought about the details. There is no sign that any of the lenders agree with this. “The government may say it wants to open mortgages to people for housing benefits, but if the lenders do not agree to do so, it will not happen.
