Brazil has confirmed the first case of smallpox in a 41-year-old man who had traveled to Europe, the Ministry of Health announced on Thursday.
Monkey pox is a rare disease that is generally confined to West and Central Africa. It is associated with but less severe than smallpox, causing a spreading rash, fever, chills and pain, among other symptoms.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has already recorded nearly 1,000 cases of the disease in 29 non-endemic countries. Most of them have been found in Britain, Canada, Germany, Portugal and Spain.
The first Brazilian to become infected had traveled to both Spain and Portugal, the health ministry said in a statement. He was being treated and was “in good condition,” he said, adding that his close contacts were under surveillance.
Brazil is the third Latin American country to record smallpox cases after Argentina and Mexico.
So far, the WHO says no deaths have been reported in countries where monkey pox is not endemic.
