A man who was fatally shot by police outside an Alabama school where officials said he tried to enter had “serious mental health problems” and was attending school as a child, according to his brother. Justin White told WIAT-TV that Robert Tyler White, 32, looked a bit “disappointed” the last time he saw him last week, but that was not unusual. “It always looks wrong,” White said. Officials said a “potential intruder” – later identified as White – went to several doors trying to break into Walnut Park Elementary School on Thursday as a summer literacy program for nearly 30 children took place. All outside doors were locked and the man was killed after trying to grab a police officer’s gun outside the building, state police said. Justin White said his older brother suffered from “serious mental health problems” and may have tried to kill him by police. White said his brother, whom he called “Bobby,” was a garbage collector in North Carolina for eight years before returning to Gadzden. The brother went to Walnut Park as a child and never received the mental help he needed, White said. “But I thought it was going well,” White said. Justin White said he was surprised his brother was involved in the incident, but added that the man was also “hot-headed”. Authorities did not say whether Bobby White, a former resident of Bannwell, North Carolina, was armed or why he was trying to get into the school or a police patrol that state police said he tried to get in before he was killed.
