One of the most seriously injured victims of that shooting remains in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital. Pierre Riley, 48, was one of 14 shot at California Avenue and Polk Street Monday night during a vigil for a woman who had died of natural causes. A 15th person was hit by a car during the incident. Riley was last captured in a photo holding a photo of his late close friend before the shooting. Riley’s family is asking people to keep him in their prayers. “We’re asking people to pray for his strength and his recovery because he was a lovable and nice person,” said his stepdaughter Artkeshia McGee. “Everyone around here loved and liked him.” His stepdaughter said the 48-year-old was shot in the head and is in critical condition as he clings to life. “I just want to keep my mind on being positive about him. So everything will be fine,” McGee said. The shooting had neighbors, like Eddie, rushing out of his home to help him. “Absolute chaos! It was dark, and people are not sure where their friends and family are. Someone got hit by the car shooting, so you have a body in the street,” he said. On Tuesday, dozens gathered at the site to speak out against gun violence and demand change. Breakthrough Urban Ministries held a press conference there at 10 a.m., while Mayor Jason Ervin plans a rally at 6 p.m. with religious leaders. Family of some of the victims chose not to attend the morning press conference, where a coalition of stakeholders called on Chicago to do the right thing and turn those responsible over. “We need men and women to take responsibility for your own community,” said Rev. Cornelius Parks. “There’s only so much CPD can do. There’s only so much outsiders can do. If you don’t take a stand in your own community, this could be your son, this could be your daughter.” “It was probably one of the worst days of my aldermanic career to hear this kind of news,” Ervin said. The youngest victim is 3 years old. An 11-year-old and a teenager, who may be 13, were also shot. The other victims are in their 30s, 40s and 50s, according to police. The victims’ conditions range from very serious injuries to non-life threatening injuries. At least six people are listed in serious or critical condition at nearby hospitals. No deaths have been reported yet. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Chicago Police Department and a reward of up to $15,000 is being offered for information leading to charges and/or a conviction in this incident. No one is in custody. An investigation by the Chicago Police Department is ongoing. INTERACTIVE SAFETY TRACKER | Track crime and safety in your neighborhood Copyright © 2022 WLS-TV.
