United may find it difficult to trust Ronaldo this summer, amid interest from Real Madrid for the transfer window. The Portuguese superstar has been linked with a return to the Bernabeu. Carlo Ancelotti is a big fan of the 37-year-old and would love to add the frontman to his team after winning the Champions League and La Liga. It will only increase their chances of recovering their prices last season. It is a tempting prospect and must have crossed Ronaldo’s mind – especially as he prepares to take part in an event in which he has never played and probably has no intention of doing so in the Europa League. The Red Devils had a miserable campaign last year and finished the season with their lowest scores ever. However, Ronaldo insisted he would not go anywhere and said this month that he was looking forward to working under Eric ten Hague. “We are happy and excited, not only the players but also the fans. I wish him the best and let us believe that next year we will win trophies,” he said. “For me, the most important thing is to try to win the games and try to win a league or a cup, but I think Manchester will be where it belongs. As I said before, sometimes it takes time, but I still believe.” United have been in this position in the past, however, in 2009, when Ronaldo insisted he would not go anywhere despite Real Madrid’s great interest. He said in May: “I’m at United right now and I do not care what happens [at Real Madrid]. “I only care what happens next season at Manchester United.” Less than a month later, Ronaldo wore the famous white and the rest is history. Fast-forward 13 years and is almost the same situation. If Real came with a huge offer, could the five-time Ballon d’Or winner resist? Would he like to travel all over Europe to face teams like Ludogorets and Dinamo Zagreb? Ronaldo may say he wants to stay at Old Trafford, but his reasoning has not mattered in the past. The veteran star was United’s most important player last year, finishing the season as its top scorer in all competitions with 24 – including six in the Champions League. It is a competition that the striker absolutely loves and desperately wants to promote his legacy. One in which he wants to play so much that he may be ready to deny his promises once again.
