As of 10:45 pm Friday night, there were nearly 80,000 BC Hydro customers on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands experiencing outages. At the time, more than 45,000 of them were in the North Island region and almost 33,000 in the South Island. Meanwhile, the Lower Mainland/Sunshine Coast region had more than 144,000 customers without power. The company said its crews would work through the night and into Saturday to restore power to all those affected, but added that many would not have power back until the morning. “High winds this afternoon caused several outages in the area and all available crews are being mobilized to restore power to affected customers. They will continue to work through the night to restore power as quickly as possible, but we expect some customers to be without power overnight,” the company said in a warning on its website. “Individual recovery times will be provided as they become available. Thank you for your patience and we will continue to provide updates as they become available.” Environment Canada had issued a wind warning for Friday night, in effect for Greater Victoria, East and West Vancouver Island and the Southern Gulf Islands.
