New Zealand v Fiji and Tonga v Samoa are the other quarter finalists. Here’s the coverage from Australia’s win over Lebanon last night: Goodbye! Updated at 17.01 GMT Stanley Tepend, the PNG manager, speaking to the BBC: “We’re proud of the second half, we showed we can match England. It’s not the start we wanted, but we’ll get a lot out of it. “Yeah, their start caught us … we didn’t have the ball there for the first 20, 25 minutes … they caught us and jumped in front very quickly there. “After half-time the boys responded to it, which is a pleasing sign. I wouldn’t say it will do any damage [to rugby league in Papau New Guinea]. Everyone back home will be disappointed, but I know deep down they will be proud of the boys.” Aaron Bauer is our man at the DW Stadium and here’s his match report, hot off the press: Updated at 16:45 GMT Herbie Farnworth is speaking on BBC Now: “The first 30 minutes we were really good… that set the tone for the game, really. “I always practice hard, with all my little skills, and footwork is one of them. “I like it here [back in England, after his move to Australia and the Brisbane Broncos]. “We have no egos in us [England] club. It’s about being a good person first … that’s our guide … hopefully we’ll continue to win it.” It’s the Rugby League World Cup. Tom Burgess speaking to the BBC: “It was a really good start for us…we were very focused on starting well…we wanted to run hard and defend well. We knew PNG would come out hard, and they did. Credit to the boys, we got some early points. “It wasn’t really about PNG. It was more about us. We wanted to start well, be relentless, be England. “I’m older now, probably a little wiser. It’s my third World Cup now, I know how much it means, I don’t take anything for granted… this is very special, a World Cup at home… I just want to make every performance my best. “Waney just wants us to be urgent … get in there and we do it together … we kept Papua New Guinea in their own half for the first few sets, and we got the first tries after that. Waney said, it was the shortest halftime speech he’s ever given. He’s a perfectionist like most managers… we knew we had another 40 minutes and we wanted to be tough, relentless and clinical.” Updated at 16:38 GMT Speaking to the BBC, England manager Shaun Wane said: “I thought we did really well, our first half was brilliant… The second half was a bit poor but against a team like Papua New Guinea, to get to the semi-finals of a World Cup, I’m really impressed. “He [Makinson] he’s done it for years and years… fair play to him, our whole back was good today. “I was really impressed with Burgess, very good… I have good players on the bench, we are in a good position.” “I’m going to the Tonga v Samoa game and I hope they do, it should be a great game. We will show them the respect they deserve [in the semi-final next week] and we will give our best. “We’re going to keep improving, every time we practice, hopefully we can improve.” Updated at 16:33 GMT Makinson, who scored an incredible 30 points, told the BBC: “It’s nice, isn’t it [scoring a record five tries]a special achievement, but going to London for a semi-final will be even bigger. “Once you pull those England colors it’s special… I want to be a World Cup winner and we’re working towards that. “There will be bigger games and I hope to succeed in them.”
Full time! England 46-6 Papua New Guinea
This, in fact, ended after 20 minutes. Maybe even 10 minutes. England were simply unstoppable in the first half and will face either Samoa or Tonga in the semi-finals next weekend. Updated at 16:52 GMT 79 min: There is a PNG captain challenge for a tackle incident but it is unsuccessful as England face a scrum. Makinson sprints down the left wing again looking for the No.6. 77 min: The players find time to squeeze in a quick scramble before the conclusion. Martin, the PNG skipper, ends up with a bloody nose after a big tackle on Morgan and everyone gathers. Updated at 16:19 GMT
Try it! 74 mins: England 46-0 Papua New Guinea (Maxinson)
That’s a record FIVE tries for Makinson, the first player to break the four-try mark in a match for the England rugby team. It’s a wonderful finish in that left corner, too. He does not hesitate to raise his hand, four fingers and a thumb, to show his achievement. With the conversion from outside it hits the post. Makinson scored 30 of England’s points, with five tries and five conversions. Amazing scenes. Tommy Makinson goes for his record breaking attempt. Try it! 69 mins: England 42-6 Papua New Guinea (Ngutlik)
Johnston takes a low kick for the corner and Jimmy Ngutlik sprints onto it and touches down. So his main problem is that he finds himself sliding towards ad hoardings at a rate of knots… but he manages to protect himself from the impact. Extras are added by Rhyse Martin with a brilliant conversion. The crowd is over 23,000 at the DW Stadium today, a record for an RLWC quarter-final, says the commentator. Updated at 16:12 GMT 67 mins: PNG have the power in a scrum on halfway. Shaun Wane is pictured looking unhappy with a video referee decision after challenging the England captain in an earlier tackle. This comes shortly after the heady moments of the first half when the tries came down like rain, er, rain at Wigan. 64 mins: Young is almost inside on the right again after a mix-up between Johnston and MacDonald, both trying to get hold of the same high ball from the tryline. This was a poor game from PNG. They had a rough afternoon but managed to meet the Princess of Wales. Updated at 16.04 GMT 61 min: England turn the ball over and win down the left wing. PNG are not doing themselves many favors here. They must be desperate for the final whistle, but they still have almost the whole of the last quarter to deal with.
Try it! 58 mins: Engad 42-0 Papua New Guinea (Makinson)
He’s a threat in this second half and he’s finally getting there. Makinson breaks through after good work by Mike McMicken, off the bench, and that makes it four tries for Makinson. Makinson himself pulls the conversion lightly and the score remains 42-0 after the final try, England’s eighth of the match. Tommy Makinson scores his fourth try. Photo: Tim Goode/PA Updated at 16.08 GMT 56 mins: Makinson is almost on the left wing once again but he is close to making contact with two PNG defenders. The rain seems to have stopped at Wigan but the pitch is still very slippery. 53 min: Williams fires a long, high kick into the left-hand corner that is cleared by Makinson but he rebounds. The fluency England showed in the first half isn’t quite there – and PNG compete better in defence. Papua New Guinea’s Lachlan Lam and Justin Olam tackle Dominic Young. Photo: Jan Kruger/Getty Images for RLWC Updated at 15:53 GMT 49 mins: England move within striking distance again, but a Williams volley is flicked on and bounces out of play. Updated at 15:47 GMT 47 mins: No, Simbeken are now off after that HIA, which seems to be the right call. 46 mins: England build an attack that ends with PNG falling under the sticks. Jeremiah Simbeken takes a nasty hit to the side of the head during a tackle but appears to be OK to continue. 44 mins: The Princess of Wales is pictured smiling during a (relatively) uneventful start to the second half. England, if they needed reminding, won the first half 38-0.
Start of the second half!
Let’s go. Updated at 15:37 GMT
Half time! England 38-0 Papua New Guinea
Absolute dominance. Seven attempts. Nothing in PNG to paste. Makinson speaks: “It’s half the job… we’ve started well… we hope to continue our dominance. They’re a great team, the score doesn’t show it… we’ll go again.” See you in a few minutes for more. Updated at 15:24 GMT 38 mins: PNG have a bit more of the ball but still look dazed and confused by the barrage of tries scored by England. The question for Wane is: how best to use the second half in preparation for the semi-final and final, with the match long won? Not the kind of luxury a manager generally has at any World Cup… Updated at 15:21 GMT 33 mins: PNG build a meaningful attack for the first time, and it’s almost on the right wing. They try a kick with the last play but nobody can get on the end of it and England clear the danger. 30 mins: PNG have made just 49 meters of England’s 694 to this point. This is unprecedented, for sure. It’s an absolute humiliation at the moment and you have to sympathize with everyone on the PNG side. Updated at 15:13 GMT
Try it! 26 mins: England 38-0 PNG (Maxinson)
An up and down is sent to the area within the PNG target. Alex Johnston can’t get it together under pressure from Welsby. Makinson scores and England challenge the referee’s decision that the ball was clearly caught. He goes upstairs and after checking that all the chasers are onside, the TMO decides it’s clearly a try for England. “They’re in shock, I think, they’re in a bit of a free fall,” says the BBC’s co-commentator of PNG’s afternoon so far. Stanley Tepend, the manager, is pictured looking shocked in the stands.
