The announcement came after the CBI warned Rishi Sunak not to undermine growth by cutting capital spending as it struggles to plug a £50 hole in the government’s finances, with reports it is also looking at the Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk. The original plan for a new high-speed line between Liverpool and Hull was reduced by former prime minister Boris Johnson to an upgrade of the existing track, with a planned stop at Bradford scrapped. But the decision was overturned by Liz Truss, who pledged to build the £40bn project in full.
