Rep. Zoe Lofgren, a member of the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, told CNN on Sunday that the committee will ask former Assistant Secret Service Director Tony Ornato to testify again.
“We are in a position in the very near future to call the Secret Service witnesses again for some additional questions,” the California Democrat told CNN’s Pamela Brown on “CNN Newsroom,” explaining that the panel wanted them to “go through all the evidence documents … over a million documents,” which they have now done.
The House Select Committee made clear it believed Ornato was a central figure who could provide valuable information about former President Donald Trump’s movements and intentions as late as Jan. 6.
Not only did Ornato once run Trump’s intelligence, he also made the unprecedented move to join the White House staff as deputy chief of staff in December 2019 in an interim assignment and eventually returned to the Secret Service to perform its training program.
At this point, Ornato met with the commission on two occasions — in January and March — as part of its investigation.
It is unclear whether Ornato will end up testifying about the allegations by Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. Hutchinson specifically testified that Ornato had told her that Trump flew into a rage and yelled at a member of his bodyguard detail as he asked to be driven to the Capitol on January 6.
Lofgren said Sunday that she could not expand further on Rep. Pete Aguilar’s comments during Thursday’s public hearing that the committee is considering a possible attempt to suppress testimony related to that incident.
“It’s not just the incident, but the testimony — and I will say, we have, in general, questions about the advice given to some witnesses and whether all the witnesses were completely honest with the committee, and that’s something we’re concerned about. and I think the Justice Department will be very interested,” Lofgren said.
Asked Sunday who else in the Secret Service would be called back to testify, Lofgren also mentioned Trump’s Secret Service chief, Robert Engel, “and a few others,” but did not specify who.
“We want to make sure we get the straight story. Some of the testimonies received don’t seem to line up with some of the documents, so we need to get a better understanding of it from them,” he said.
