A Texas judge issued a temporary restraining order Friday that barred the state from examining families of transgender children who have received gender reassignment treatment, which the state has classified as child abuse. Judge Jan Soifer’s decision suspends investigations against three sued families and bans similar investigations against members of the LGBTQ + PFLAG Inc. defense team. (Jake Crandall / The Montgomery Advertiser via AP) Friday’s decision was in response to a challenge from Lambda Legal and the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of the families of the three teenagers and PFLAG. Two of the teens were 16 and one was 14. A Lambda lawyer told the judge that the 14-year-old’s family found out after the lawsuit was filed that the state investigation into them had stopped. The families had told the courts that the investigations had caused stress to them and their children. The mother of one of the teenagers said that her child attempted suicide and was hospitalized the day Abbott issued his order. The outpatient psychiatric facility to which the child was referred reported that the family for child abuse found out that hormone therapy had been prescribed, the mother said in a court statement. The Texas Supreme Court ruled in May that the lower court had exceeded its authority by blocking all future investigations. The Texas Department of Family and Protection said it launched nine inquiries following Abbott’s order and a previous non-binding legal opinion from Attorney General Ken Paxton that identifies certain medical treatments that confirm gender as child abuse.
