The incident happened during the match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Diego Schwarzman on the first day of the games. Tsitsipas had closed out the first set 6-2 and during the change, a man ran onto the court and lit a fire, which briefly set his hand on fire. The man was wearing a T-shirt that read: ‘End UK Private Jets’ and was quickly pulled out of the court after the fire was put out. A statement from the Laver Cup read: “A man entered the pitch this afternoon and was immediately removed by security. Play was briefly halted, he was arrested and the situation is being dealt with by the police.” The Metropolitan Police had earlier confirmed that a man had been arrested on suspicion of a serious offence. A police statement said: “At around 4.25pm on Friday, September 23, a man entered a tennis court at the O2 Arena and set his hand on fire. “Security personnel extinguished the fire. “The man was arrested on suspicion of serious trespassing. He was taken to hospital as a precaution. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.” A quick check of the surface was carried out to ensure it had not been damaged during the freak incident, before the match could resume after a short delay. He was unable to take out world number 6 Tsitsipas with the second set closing quickly to beat Schwartzman 6-2 6-1 and put Team Europe 2-0 up at the end of the afternoon session.
