Ondon was hit by flash floods on Thursday morning as Storm Claudio brings heavy rain and thunderstorms to the capital. Flood warnings have been issued by the Met Office and the Environment Agency across England, including west London near Ruislip, Wembley and Harrow and north London near Waltham and Cheshunt. A yellow rain warning has been issued for south-east England, with the Met Office warning that road flooding will make journeys longer. Rainfall of up to 30mm is expected. The downpours have been described as “biblical” by some passengers. One driver on Twitter said it was “probably the wettest and worst conditions I’ve ever driven in”. A motorist became stuck in his car as he drove through floodwaters on the A41 at Hendon Way, having to get out of the driver’s seat and onto the top of his car, before abandoning his vehicle.

The heavy rainfall is a result of Storm Claudio, which swept over northern France earlier this week. The London Fire Brigade said it had received “several” flood-related calls which have been referred to local councils. The Brigade is warning people to avoid driving or walking through floodwater and not to let children or pets play in it. A video posted on Twitter shows several cars driving through flood waters – including a Thames Water van – during the morning rush hour in West Drayton, Hillingdon.
