The 33-year-old man was cleaning out the freezer when it accidentally locked itself around 3am, according to US media reports. It was found more than five hours later. ABC News reported that he had come to the US from Mali and was a father of five. One of his co-workers said the man had been working at the bakery — Beigel’s in Brooklyn — for three months. In a statement, Beigel’s Bakery manager David Greenberger said: “We are devastated by the loss of our employee in this accident. “The family has been notified and we express our deepest condolences. “Bereavement counselors are on site to provide advice and support to our family and employees. “This is an ongoing situation and we are cooperating with all investigations. We have no further comment at this time.” Police said the victim’s manner and cause of death are still unclear. Beigel’s is located in the East Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn. Its customers include airlines, hotels and other businesses.
