You have to get the spaces for the shots and it was good to see the transfer of the gameplan. “What came first, the chicken or the egg? The Spurs team is a great team so far, I have analyzed them and it was difficult to play them. That’s why I’m so happy with the performance and it was good to see.” “The first goal was a distraction, but in the end I have to be honest and tell you that United played better than us. They created more chances than us. We put will on the pitch, but we have to show that level, we have to try to improve and get better. The standard was high and United showed today that they are much better than us today. “I think United are a very good team and you know very well what they have done in the transfer market and what they can spend. You are talking about two different levels. In this kind of game we can do better. We’re up against Chelsea and Arsenal today too. “We have to try to improve and there is only work to do. I repeat, especially in this type of game, when the atmosphere is very noisy, United are an important team, we can improve and raise our level.” Bruno Fernandes speaks: “Everyone is really happy, it was a great performance and the perfect performance,” says the United captain in an interview with the BBC. “We’ve got to keep going, understand it’s a win or lose process and keep focus and keep going. “We had a lot of good performances, against Newcastle we did really well, we controlled the game and we didn’t get the result. Today overall was the best performance because we got the result and the performance. We need more than that. “We know the quality we have up front, we know we can be dangerous, so if we have chances to shoot, we have to have the belief that we can score. Marcus Rashford didn’t score today but he did so much, Jadon Sancho also and he was involved in Fred’s goal.” Updated at 22.51 BST “I have seen him [leaving], I didn’t talk to him. I’ll deal with that tomorrow. I enjoyed the show today. I enjoyed this performance, we are celebrating this win and now we have to recover from it and we have a big game against Chelsea, [PL] it’s so exciting” — jamie jackson (@JamieJackson___) October 19, 2022 Erik Ten Hag speaks: Asked about unused second-choice Cristiano Ronaldo’s very public decision to head down the tunnel to the dressing room with several minutes of the match remaining, the Manchester United manager says: “I’ve seen him. I didn’t talk to him after that. I’ll deal with that tomorrow.” Updated at 22.36 BST

Final: Manchester United 2-0 Tottenham

Peep! Peep! Drink it! Manchester United win an engrossing but largely one-sided game in their spare time, making arguably their best change under Erik ten Haag to see what happened to the challenge of a Spurs side that looked second best all night. Fred and Bruno Fernades got the goals, but one suspects it will be unused substitute Cristiano Ronaldo, who grabs the headlines after leaving the arena before the final whistle. 90+4 mins: Spurs win a corner, Lisandro Martinez clears the ball under pressure from Harry Kane. Nothing comes out of the set piece and the final whistle blows. 90+2 mins: Djedd Spence is brought down by Fred in the Manchester United penalty area and the midfielder chases upwards with the ball at his feet. 89 min: The camera cuts to Cristiano Ronaldo, who heads down the tunnel for an early shower. 88 mins: Double change for Manchester United: Oliver Skipp and Djed Spence for Ivan Perisic and Rodrigo Bedancourt. 87 min: Double change for Manchester United: Anthony Elanga and Christian Eriksen for Casemiro and Jadon Sancho. 85 min: Raphael Varane plays the ball to Rose, taking it off Moura’s finger as the substitute enters the United penalty area. He accidentally grabs Moura with his arm, handcuffing him to the side of the head. 82 mins: Having seen his side create absolutely nothing in this second half while looking completely bereft of ideas, Antonio Conte finally makes the changes with less than 10 minutes remaining. Davinson Sanchez, Ryan Sessegnon and Lucas Moura come on for Yves Bissouma, Eric Dier and Matt Doherty. 80 mins: Bruno Fernandes is played in behind Rashford’s cross, gets forward, takes the ball around Lloris and side-foots into an empty net from 15 yards. Offside but not by much. 76 min: Marcus Rashford makes a challenge, counters upwards and plays the ball inside. It has been intercepted. 75 min: Change for Manchester United: Scott McTominay for Anthony. 74 min: It seems strange that Antonio Conte hasn’t made a change yet. Hugo Lloris makes his eighth save of the game, getting a powerful left hand behind a Marcus Rashford rasper. The United striker can’t believe his shot was kept out. Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris again denies Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford. In an offside position, Harry Kane got into De Gea’s chest from a tight angle. The flag went up but Hooper swung the game and Fernandes took full advantage.

The United striker can’t get the ball fully under control to clear a shot from a tight angle and eventually runs it wide. 61 min: Tottenham’s players continue to chase shadows, unable to take a moment to put the ball in when it comes to them. Case in point: Antony wins a corner for his side seconds after Hojbjerg loses the ball to Raphael Varane. Nothing comes of it. 58 min: United fans mob Diogo Dalot from the stands as he and his team-mates continue to pile on the damage on Tottenham. They’re only a goal up, but completely dominant for nearly an hour. 56 mins: The Stretford Ed tenants appeal for a penalty after Marcus Rashford goes down under a challenge from Eric Dier after being played back by Bruno Fernandes. It’s not going to be a spot and it seems like a good decision. 53 min: Antony curls a low, left-footed effort close to the post after good work from Bruno Fernades, who drove in front of the midfield before picking out the Brazilian. 50 mins: Harry Kane shoots from distance, wide, for a corner. Half time: Manchester United 0-0 Tottenham

Peep! At the end of a first half in which Manchester United were by far the better team, the deadlock remains intact. Spurs have been imposing in defence, while their goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has been kept busy. They hang in there… but only just. 45+2 mins: Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg can’t hold on to the ball in line play after Ivan Perisic’s foot pass. 44 min: Harry Kane’s shot at the near post is saved by David De Gea. His follow up hits Dalot in the face and the quarterback goes to the ground. Play continues, much to the chagrin of the Manchester United players, who point out to referee Simon Hooper that he immediately stopped play when the same thing happened to Eric Dier. They have a point. Oooooh. He is a smart kid. Photo: Oli Scarff/AFP/Getty Images Lisandro Martinez of…
