Hazing is suspected of having happened at the SAE University branch on April 13, at an event attended by new members, police in the university-host city of Durham said in a press release. Arrest warrants were issued for 46 SAE members on Tuesday and 10 of them were arrested by 2pm on Friday, police said. The 10 have been charged with abuse, a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $ 1,200, police said. Police did not release details of the allegations and CNN’s attempts to obtain the indictment or a comment from Strafford County Attorney’s Office were not immediately successful. Police said they began an investigation April 18 when university officials told them there could have been noise in the house five days earlier. According to police, a warrant also accuses the fraternity’s capital of harassing students. The charge carries a fine of up to $ 20,000 when prosecuted against an organization, police said. The university said it contacted Durham police shortly after being informed of the fraternity’s national headquarters about the alleged incident. “We have been cooperating with the police throughout the investigation and the fraternity has been temporarily suspended pending the outcome of the police investigation,” the university said in a statement. The Illinois-based national fraternity service center said as soon as it was informed of the allegations that it “immediately issued a cessation and cessation of capital, launched our own investigation and informed the management of the University of New Hampshire.” “The SAE investigation was stopped as soon as it was notified of the start of a police investigation. We are cooperating fully with the local authorities’ investigation and have urged all our members to do the same,” the organization said in a statement. “Sigma Alpha Epsilon denounces all acts of commotion and misconduct that do not represent the values of brotherhood defined by our faith, the true Lord,” the statement said. The fraternity statement does not deal with the nature of the noisy allegations. On its website, SAE states that it has more than 12,000 active collective members. The university’s spring semester ended in May. the winter semester begins in late August. CNN’s Jason Hanna contributed to this report.
