Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has given an update on defender Takehiro Tomiyasu after he had to be substituted through injury in the club’s Europa League win over Zurich. The Japan international had only come on as a second-half substitute for Ben White, but his time on the pitch was short-lived as he appeared to have picked up an injury. Arsenal would go on to win the game against the Swiss side despite Tomiyasu’s injury, thanks to a brilliant strike from left-back Kieran Tierney, which helped them top Group A. Takehiro Tomiyasu picked up muscle injury in Arsenal’s Europa League win over Zurich Mikel Arteta said they will know the full extent of the injury in the next 48 hours Arteta confirmed that Tomiyasu was replaced after he “felt something” and later told BT Sport: “We do not know. He had a muscle problem and had to go because we don’t want to take any chances. “But we will assess him over the next 48 hours and decide what is best to do next.” Tomiyasu had hoped to play at the World Cup in Qatar this month for his Japanese national team Tests will reveal the extent of the injury to the Japan international who has already been called up for the World Cup in Qatar. As for Arsenal’s immediate future, we’ll have to wait and see if he can play in their crucial Premier League clash with Chelsea on Sunday. However, the upside for Arteta is that if Tomiyasu is unable to play, he can rely on Tierney, who showed he is still fully capable of being a reliable member of Arsenal’s squad with a man-of-the-match performance against Zurich . Kieran Tierney proved the match winner for Arsenal with a stunning strike against Zurich Arteta praised the Scot after the game and said: “He was very good. Kieran has shown real maturity and respects certain decisions and hasn’t played many minutes. “He played really well today and scored a great goal that helped us win the game, and that’s what we require from all players to be ready when we need them to make the difference.”
