Schoolboy Sebastian Kalinowski, 15, suffered horrific abuse for months by his mother Agnieszka, 36, and stepfather Andrzej Latoszewski, 38, a steroid-injected martial arts fighter. During their six-week trial, jurors were forced to sit through hours of “horrific” footage of Sebastian being abused and tortured.
So shocking was the level of violence used against the innocent teenager, jurors were excused from jury service for life by the Honorable Mrs Justice Lambert, who told them: “You had to endure horrific footage of Sebastian Kalinowski in great pain and then death.
“You have fulfilled your duty as jurors in a truly commendable manner. Let me thank you for all your dedication and patience. Let me also thank you on behalf of the justice system.’
Kalinowska previously admitted child cruelty, while Latozewski, a hardcore steroid abuser, admitted manslaughter, but both had denied murder.
Sebastian moved to the UK from his native Poland, where he lived with his father, in October 2020, 10 months before his death.
But life with his mother and stepfather turned into a prolonged and miserable period of suffering.
The ‘shy’ teenager attended grammar school in Huddersfield where he was described as a ‘model pupil’. He was short and thin and looked younger than his age.
The teachers were unaware of the horror unfolding at home, where he was seen by parents as an “obstacle”.
Prosecutor Jason Pitter, QC, told jurors the abuse became “increasingly serious and violent”.
They treated him like a “gofar” and made him call Latosevsky “sir” or “sir”.
Between beatings, the teenager was forced to do “humiliating exercises” such as squats and press-ups.
CCTV footage seized by police revealed a wealth of chilling evidence.
In a 30-minute clip played to the jury, Latoszewski was seen hitting the boy more than 100 times, stopping at one stage to wipe sweat from his face while Kalinowska watched TV and ate toast.
In the weeks before his death in August last year, Sebastian suffered repeated violent attacks.
At one the stepfather whipped him with a cable, while at one stage his mother grabbed him by the throat and threw him to the ground.
Mr Pitter said the punishments “were precipitated by things like Sebastian dropping food on his bedroom floor or going to the toilet during the night”.
Three days before he died, Latosevsky punched, kicked and strangled the teenager in a prolonged beating that lasted more than four hours.
“Sebastian often struggled to stand but was picked up or held down to continue the attack,” Peter said.
The day before his death, Sebastian was punched and kicked and his mother and stepfather stabbed him with a needle before further assaulting him in the bedroom.
Kalinovska tried to force a slipper into her son’s mouth towards the end of the attack. Footage from that day showed Sebastian in a lot of pain and struggling to breathe, the court heard.

“Like all bullies, unable to maintain respect in any other way, you sought to bully Sebastian who was weaker than you, and in Sebastian you found the way.”
Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Chief Inspector Tony Nicholson of the Homicide and Major Investigation Squad, who led the police investigation, said: “This was without doubt the most harrowing case I have experienced in my 29 years as a police officer.
“Sebastian was a child who couldn’t be more isolated and seems to have suffered the most horrific abuse in silence, and even saw it as normal.
“Latoszewski and Kalinowska abused this boy in a mean and evil way, and we may never know why they chose to act in this inhumane way.
“We recovered overwhelming evidence of their assaults and of them discussing them in phone messages, and I can say that the video we have seen of this abuse has upset experienced detectives.
“The injuries inflicted on poor Sebastian were done in a way that would not have been visible, and it is clear that both parties acted in a way to hide evidence of their attacks on him.
“They will now both have many years in prison to reflect on why they chose to cause such pain, suffering and ultimately death, to an innocent boy.”

However, both were today convicted of Sebastian’s murder by a jury following a five-week trial at Leeds Crown Court.
