Police presence in Estella Road, Buckland, Portsmouth on Thursday 3 November 2022 Picture: Habibur Rahman Police are treating the deaths as “unexplained” and not suspicious, but the double death on the same day has led to “shock” and “sadness” inside the block. Flowers have been placed on the door of the address, while the rest of the film from a rope and a forensic glove on the ground offer a reminder of the disturbing turn of events. A local said the man and woman lived in the flat for around a year before adding: ‘They were the best neighbors I’ve ever had. They were good people. They had a lovely dog and we talked sometimes. “I have no idea what happened. All I heard was their dog howling at one point. It seems strange how it happened. It’s sad to see them go, especially in such strange circumstances.’ Another said: “I only saw the man once and the woman twice. They seemed very nice to me. She was polite and friendly when I gave her back a package. I don’t think any of us knew them that well. Police in Estella Road, Buckland, on Thursday Picture: Habibur Rahman “There was never any problem with them or arguments. I found them very pleasant. If something untoward happened there, then people would know as you can hear everything from other apartments. “It’s a shock to everyone … it’s not something you expect to happen on your doorstep. It’s strange and sad to think that people had problems so close to us and we didn’t know anything about it. It’s very quiet around here though. “We drove by there three times that day and had no idea. Everyone was saying what great people they were on Facebook. Another added: “Their dog Staffy was running up and saying hello. The man always said hello and asked how I was doing. I didn’t see much of the woman.’ Residents said they returned to the block to see emergency crews swarming the area with people asking to go to their apartments as searches were carried out. “It was a shock when I came home to be greeted by so many of them. They told me to close my door and stay away,” said one woman. A police spokeswoman, giving the latest update on the situation, said: “The deaths are being treated as unexplained while inquiries into the circumstances are ongoing. “We would like to reassure members of the public that we do not believe there is a wider risk at this time.” It is understood that the property was tested for hazardous substances but was deemed safe.
