David Hytner was at the San Siro and his report on England’s demise reached… … while Jonathan Liew was in Leipzig to see Hungary surrender Germany. Thanks for reading this MBM. Good night! Gareth Southgate doesn’t make it in time to speak to Channel 4, who must think they’ve been sold the right puppy with this England deal. These are five matches they have shown. Three defeats, two draws and the only goal England have scored is a Harry Kane penalty. I’m not sure they’ve delivered anything this relentlessly disappointing since the days of Murun Buchstansangur. Gareth Southgate went to applaud the England support at the end of the match. He was greeted with loud boos. There is now nothing on Germany’s game at Wembley on Monday night… and yet so much depends on it. The mood music isn’t great with a game and two months until England kick off their World Cup campaign. Another loss would really raise alarm bells. What could England do with a first win since March and some breathing room. Big game is coming! England is in a dark place right now. This is their third loss in their last five games. Their run without a win is five, their worst run since 2014 under Roy Hodgson. They went more than seven and a half hours without scoring in open play. The World Cup is just around the corner. “It’s obviously disappointing,” says Declan Rice on Channel 4. “Every tournament we’ve started winning the group and progressed and won every game. Obviously in the Nations League we have fallen below our standards. But I didn’t think it was all bad tonight. One chance, one goal, we controlled the game but we lacked that edge. But it’s coming, and this is a much better performance than the summer. It’s not like we’re not creating chances. I see it in training, there are goals for fun. Trust me, we’ll be fine!” ALSO FINAL: Germany 0-1 Hungary. Hungary remain top of Group A3, now with ten points. Italy overtook Germany in second place with eight points. Germany are in third place with six, while England prop up the group with two points. This means …
Hungary will win the group and go through to the final if they hold off Italy in Budapest on Monday Italy can still win the group and reach the final if they beat Hungary Germany can no longer win the group or advance to the final England are relegated to Division B
FINAL: Italy 1-0 England
The whistle goes. A well-deserved win for Italy. England are relegated to Division B. The final whistle as England are relegated from their group. Don’t worry, the World Cup is only eight weeks away. Photo: Marco Bertorello/AFP/Getty Images Updated at 21.55 BST 90 min +6: James shovels Italy’s cross in from the right. It’s a nice delivery that finds Bellingham six yards out. Bellingham is headed. This is surely England’s last chance to save itself. 90 min +5: Gnodo turns the jets left and draws a foul from James. The clock is ticking and Italy look to be in control. On the touchline, Southgate looks pensive, hands in pockets, staring blankly ahead. 90 min +4: Grealish is shown a yellow card for deliberate handball. This means he has been suspended for the Germany match. Jack Grealish gets a yellow card. Photo: Nick Potts/PA Updated at 21.51 BST 90 min +3: Rice’s swan comes in from the left and opens up some space. Aims a curler down the right but an easy rally is telegraphed for Donnarumma. 90 min +2: England press forward but Italy hold their shape on the edge of the box. 90 minutes +1: The first of six added minutes. A doofus enters the field and runs about like a galoot, so expect seven at least now. 90 min: Gnodo slaloms into the England area from the left but his shot is blocked by Dier. 89′: Dimarco makes way for Fratesi, while Jorginho is replaced by Emerson. 88mins: Di Lorenzo comes in from the right and rolls across for Cristante, in acres on the edge of the D. He has to work the Pope at least, but it falls wildly. Will Italy regret its disrespect? 87 min: The game is getting heavy. England can do nothing. 85 min: Gabbiandini burst down the middle left channel and hammered straight at Pope. The Italian regains possession and slides a pass down the left for Dimarco, who fires a shot past Pope and off the base of the right post. Shaw does well to avoid deflecting the rebound into the net, moving his feet deftly to turn and hack. Italy are inches away from sealing England’s fate. Federico Dimarco hits the post as Italy so close to a second goal. Photo: Alberto Lingria/Reuters Updated at 21.34 BST 83 min: Bellingham makes some space in the inside left channel, his turnovers earn him the right to shoot. Aims to the upper left, but leans back and the ball always goes over the top. 82 minute: With ten minutes for Germany, 1-0 for Hungary. With less than ten to go in Milan, England are headed for the Second Division. As things are. Updated at 21.50 BST 81 min: Before he can, goalscorer Raspadori is replaced by Gabbiandini. James then sees his free-kick saved safely by Donnarumma. 80 mins: Di Lorenzo booked for a rather rustic block on Grealis, just to the left of the Italian D. A foul in a dangerous position. 78 min: England continue to push Italy back, though without another chance. They look a bit brighter than Grealish’s introduction. “I watch with a mixed variety of Neapolitans and English people here in Naples,” reports Colum Fordham. “Big reaction from Neapolitans to great goal from Raspadori, Napoli’s new young striker”. 76 mins: Not that either. Foden, Grealish and Bellingham carry the ball from left to right across Italy’s box. Bellingham slides one down the channel for Kane, who pearls it low and hard towards goal. Donnarumma responds brilliantly. Kane tries again. Donnarumma blocks again. Italy clean. This is England’s best move of the match. Jack Grealish goes to ground. Photo: Antonio Calanni/AP Updated at 21.32 BST 74 min: Kane tries to close down Donnarumma. The Italy keeper puts him away with a cheeky Cruyff spin. This is unlikely to have improved the England captain’s bad mood. 72 min: Southgate responds by sending on Grealish and Shaw for Saka and Walker. 71 min: James takes a free-kick from the right. Dier can’t get his header on target. Miles wide right. 70 mins: Walker gave Raspadori too much space and time there. None of England’s other defenders looked particularly fired up. As things stand, England will be relegated from the first division.
TARGET! Italy 1-0 England (Raspadori 68)
Out of nowhere, a miracle goal! Raspadori delivers a speculative pass down the inside-left channel. He brings it down from the sky, takes a touch to the left, throws a shoulder back to the right, sending Walker into the shops and hits a stunning shot past Pope and into the right side of the goal. One hell of a finish! Giacomo Raspadori scores a rasper to put Italy ahead. Photo: Marco Bertorello/AFP/Getty Images Updated at 21.22 BST 66 min: Corner on the right leads to another on the left. Dimarco takes. The Pope clears again, and this time England clears its lines. Bellingham is cut off by Cristante causing Kane to get in the referee’s face. Little edge comes into this game. 65 min: Di Lorenzo throws the flat-footed Maguire down the right, drawing a foul. England do not clear the resulting free kick and Raspadori ends up shooting from a tight angle on the right. Pope kicks out in the corner. 63 min: Italy make a double change, replacing Scamaka and Barella with Pombega and Gnodo. 61 minutes: From the corner, Bellingham goes up for a high ball with Barela. The pair collide with Bellingham in the air and the Englishman falls flat on his back. He is tuned. England claimed a free-kick – they were right on the edge of the penalty area – but both the referee and VAR ruled it a 50-50 accident. There was no malice on Barella’s part, but it was a clumsy challenge and you’ve seen fouls given for less. Jude Bellingham takes a tumble. Photo: James Williamson/AMA/Getty Images Updated 21.12 BST 60 mins: Kane is sent into space on the right and sends low and hard from six yards. Sterling hopes to reach the goal post at the left post, but Toloi takes a corner, just in time. 59 mins: Bellingham cuts down the middle and sprays a pass wide left for Foden, who tries to find Kane at the far post. Acerby gets in the way to take a corner but the flag goes up for offside. 57 min: Raspadori makes a cute pass down the left for Dimarco, who sends the ball into the box for Barella. He should score from ten yards, with only Pope to beat, but he slides his effort to the right. What a miss! His blushes are spared when the flag goes up for offside. 55 min: Kane takes matters into his own hands and comes back anyway. The ref comes over to give him a little bolok, but doesn’t add insult to injury by booking him for submission. 54 mins: Kane is good to go on, yes, but he hasn’t been allowed back in yet. He’s steaming but it looks like he’s still bleeding so the assistant referee doesn’t let him back in. Ouch! Photo: Nick Potts/PA Updated 21.02 BST 53 mins: Replays show Toloi accidentally hitting Kane with a punch to the mouth. There is some blood, but the physio wipes it up, it oozes…
