Nine-year-old Jay Walters waves to the House of Assembly from the gallery. A young boy was applauded in the House of Assembly this week for his efforts to raise money for his local fire service. Placentia West-Bellevue MHA Jeff Dwyer stood up in the House of Assembly to highlight nine-year-old Jay Walters of Boat Harbour. Dwyer explains that the boy was in Kindergarten when the Baine Harbor Volunteer Fire Department visited his school. Inspired to help the department with the high cost of keeping fuel in its vehicles, Walters saved $100 and donated it to the department in memory of his grandfather – who served in that very department. As a thank you, the boy was given his grandfather’s old bunker jacket as a gift. But Walters didn’t stop there. Between 2019 and May of this year, he has donated $3,900 to the department.
