(Facebook photo by Clifford Doran.) Photos of a whale breaching off Cape Race on Friday are causing a stir on social media. Clifford Doran posted the photos on Facebook, causing immediate interest and excitement. Humpbacks are famous for breaching and performing in Newfoundland waters, but are now well on their way back to the Caribbean. This whale appears to be a rare North Atlantic right whale. The endangered creatures are not very common in Newfoundland waters. DFO marine mammal researcher Dr. Jack Lawson, says it appears to be a correct whale, but is not sure if it is the same whale that passed Cape Spear on November 2nd. He says in recent years there have been several right whale sightings off the northeast coast of Newfoundland in the late fall. He says that while it’s becoming a bit of a pattern, it’s still very rare.
