Japan’s emergency broadcasting system said the missile flew over and passed over Japanese territory. It sent evacuation warnings to residents of Miyagi, Yamagate and Niigata prefectures, urging them to stay indoors. Seoul’s General Staff did not immediately confirm what type of missile was fired or how far the weapon flew. South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported that the missile had entered the separation stage, suggesting it may be a long-range weapon. On Wednesday, Pyongyang launched 25 missiles of various types – including one that landed near South Korean waters, in what President Yun Suk-yeol said was effectively a “land missile invasion”. Wednesday’s launches were North Korea’s most ever in one day. One of the missiles flew in the direction of an inhabited South Korean island, setting off air raid sirens and forcing residents to evacuate. South Korea quickly responded by firing missiles of its own into the same border area. This is a developing story, check back for updates
