A child who fell from an apartment building in west London was taken to hospital in critical condition on Friday, police said. Emergency crews were called around 1:45 p.m. Thursday at 301 Base Line Rd. W, where a child fell from a unit window, police said. The child, whose age and gender have not been made public, was initially taken to hospital in critical condition, but his injuries are now reported as serious, police said on Friday. Construction is underway on the balconies of some units in the 11-storey building, which is owned by a Guelph company called Skyline with multiple sections.

Skyline has owned and operated the building since September 2021, said Skyline Living Vice President BJ Santavy. “As yesterday’s incident is an ongoing investigation, we are not in a position to comment further at this time,” Santavy said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, hoping for the full recovery of the child.” Police had cleared the area by Friday and construction crews continued work outside the building. Police are investigating the fall, the second time a child has fallen from an apartment building in London last year. A 22-month-old girl drowned to death from the balcony of the 20th floor of her family’s apartment at 400 Lyle St. on October 2, 2021. The toddler misplaced his leg, lost his balance and fell through a gap between the outside wall and a guardrail, said her father, who was with her at the time on the balcony. City Hall ordered Medallion Corp., the owner of the building, to build the guardrails, which he said could be dangerous to tenants.
