With numerous firework-related events taking place on Saturday night (November 5) in the area, the annual Peterlee Fireworks was billed to be a program of events including fun displays, mini discos and the main fireworks display. Despite the program of events, including numerous children’s activities taking place between 4pm and 6pm, it was the fireworks themselves that had many Peterlee residents scratching their heads. Scheduled to start at 6.30pm, some onlookers claim the Catherine wheels, Roman candles and various other fireworks lasted “less than ten minutes”. The free event, which took place at Helford Road Playing Fields, was attended by hundreds of people – but it seems the vast majority of people left disappointed. Moments after the fireworks went off, several disgruntled members of the public in attendance took to social media to call the display “disgraceful”. Taking to social media, one user wrote: “Whoever is responsible for the Peterlee fireworks this year hang your heads. Shame on you,” while another claimed: “People literally booed.” However, not everyone liked the demonstration, with some defending the council and the fact that it was a free event. One user said: “It was a free event – some people are asking too much,” while one person believes “something went wrong and they couldn’t redo it.” Peterlee City Council is yet to issue a statement regarding the fireworks display.
