In a news release, Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said officers responded to a business in the 1200-block of Summit Drive at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. Mounties found that the front window of the business had been broken and several cell phones had been taken. Surveillance footage sent to Castanet Kamloops by The Phone Depot shows two people — one wearing dark-colored clothing and another wearing a camouflage hoodie — enter the store, remove cell phones from glass cabinets and place them in a backpack. Evelyn said later that day, some of the phones were traced to “a multi-residential address” in the 700-block of Notre Dame Drive. According to The Phone Depot, this address was the shelter inside the former Greyhound terminal. “Unfortunately, the information was not properly relayed to the front-line officers on duty and the lead investigator did not receive the message until they returned to work several days later,” Evelyn said in a statement. Evelyn said police have obtained surveillance video and are sharing stills from the video to further the investigation. As the police investigation is ongoing, Evelyn said people should be careful if they want to buy a used phone. “As police work to continue efforts to trace the phones, the public is urged to be aware of where and from whom they buy used phones in case they could be stolen,” Evelyn said. Residents can check phone serial numbers before buying used phones by calling their mobile phone provider or the Canadian Police Information Centre. Anyone with information regarding the investigation is asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP detachment.
