One of them, spokeswoman Nupur Sharma, sparked outrage among Muslims in India and sparked diplomatic protests from Islamic countries apologizing to the Indian government. Sharma has been expelled from the party while another, Naveen Kumar Jindal, has been expelled. This does not calm the anger in the latter case of what some in the minority Muslim community see as increased pressure under the Hindu nationalist BJP on issues ranging from freedom of worship to the use of hijab headscarves. New Delhi police said on Thursday (June 9th) that they have filed a lawsuit against Sarma and others for “inciting people to divisive lines” on social media.
