Match report: PSV Eindhoven 2-0 Arsenal

Europa League: “In his rush to avoid two more Europa League assignments, Mikel Arteta may now have to bring out the big guns for one more,” writes Philips Stadion’s Nick Ames. Disturbing news: There are – as yet unconfirmed – reports that Pablo Mari, who is on loan at Seria A Monza from Arsenal, is one of several victims of a spate of stabbings in a Milan shopping centre. Fabrizio Romano, occasionally of this parish, says that the Spanish centre-back is being treated for his injuries in hospital. We wish him and any other victim of what appears to be a completely random attack. Elsewhere in Group A: FC Zurich beat Bodo/Glimt 2-1 with a late winner to remain third in the group with five points but unable to qualify for the knockout stages.

Final: PSV Eindhoven 2-0 Arsenal

Peep! Peep! Peeeeeeep! It all ended at the Philips Stadion, where PSV beat Arsenal in rather convincing fashion thanks to goals from Joey Veerman and Luke De Jong. Arsenal go through to the knockout stages regardless, but must beat FC Zurich next week to be sure of finishing top of Group A. The ensuing delivery fails to clear the first defender at the near post. Updated at 19.34 BST 89 min: The PSV fans are in good voice as their side play down the clock to secure the three points that will move them within two points of their visitors in Group A. 86 mins: As is often the case when the benches are emptied and wholesale changes are made, the game has lost its rhythm. That’s good news and bad news for Arsenal, who still need two goals to take the point that guarantees them top spot in the group, but were in danger of conceding many more if the game continued as it was. 83 min: PSV make another change, replacing Cody Gakpo with Mauro Junior. Gakpo was hugely impressive tonight, but it’s teenager Xavi Simons who has impressed me the most. I had never heard of him two hours ago, but I will follow his future progress with interest. 80 mins: Double change for PSV: Bradwaite and the excellent Xavi Simons out. Jordan Teze and Noni Madueke continue. 78 min: On loan at PSV from Everton, Jarrad Brantwaithe slides in a challenging save to prevent Arsenal from scoring again after PSV keeper Walter Bentiez made a superb save from Eddie Nketiah, who should have scored . He had a good game, he has young Master Brantwaite but his night is over. PSV Eindhoven’s Jarrad Branthwaite steps in to bring down Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus. Sorry for the fake news. 73 mins: Ah! This latest effort from De Jong, saved by Ramsdale, would not count as it appears to have been flagged for offside. 71 min: Bookings I didn’t get a chance to recount this a few minutes ago: Martinelli and Mwene for an argy-bargy point after the former fouled Ibrahim Sangare. 70 min: PSV turn the screw. Simons lifts the ball for the still-insignificant De Jong at the far post, but the veteran striker’s steady header is brilliantly saved by Ramsdale, who atones for his earlier mistake. 68 min: De Jong is completely unmarked at the far post for a PSV foul on the left. The ball finds its way to him but he heads it across the face of goal and out. Arsenal are incredibly lucky to be just two goals behind. It’s a mess right now. Updated at 19.19 BST 66 mins: Cody Gakpo is ruled out for his second ‘goal’ of the night for offside after some more excellent link-up play between himself and the hugely impressive Xavi Simons. It was another tidy finish to cap off an excellent PSV performance, but the flag was up once more. 64′: New goal for PSV, new change for Arsenal. Gabriel Jesus comes on for Kieran Tierney and Arsenal switch to a back three.

Thomas Partey intercepts. 60 min: This goal: Arsenal lose possession on their own wing, Andre Ramalio Silva flicking the ball past De Jong. Under pressure from Holding, he held onto the ball before rolling it into the path of Veerman, who made no mistake. De Jong has been hugely influential since coming into the half. 57 min: Arsenal hit back with a double change: Albert Xabi Lokonga and Martin Odegaard make way for Thomas Partey and Bukayo Saka.

Half time: PSV Eindhoven 0-0 Arsenal

Peep! It remains scoreless at half-time, but PSV were in the ascendancy. Cody Gakpo and Xavi Simons were outstanding for the hosts and both had terrific ‘goals’ ruled out for fractional offside. Simons’ strike in particular was outstanding – the 19-year-old with the short blonde dreadlocks received the ball in Arsenal’s packed penalty area and dribbled past three defenders before firing into the corner, only to see his effort ruled out for a foul. it had nothing to do with him. At the half-time whistle, even Rob Holding threw an arm of sympathy around the PSV striker’s shoulders.
