Strathmore RCMP said Friday they responded Sept. 10 to reports of an incident east of Calgary on Highway 1. The suspect’s vehicle was located on Highway 1 near Range Road 270. RCMP arrested two men inside after initiating a high-risk traffic stop. RCMP said they searched the vehicle and found a loaded 9mm handgun under the driver’s seat and a 12-gauge shotgun with ammunition behind the back seat. The passenger was extricated at the scene. The driver, a 51-year-old man from Calgary, was taken into custody. RCMP said a database search revealed he had other firearms registered to him. “Given the erratic and dangerous behavior in this incident, a public safety warrant was obtained to search the suspect’s home to seize any firearms pending the matter being adjudicated by the courts,” the RCMP said.
A search of the home yielded firearms
The suspect’s Calgary home was searched by Mounties and the Calgary Police Service, who found ammunition and unsecured stored firearms that included:
1 AR-15. 22 long weapons (shotguns, rifles, air guns and an M1 carbine). 20 revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. 4 airsoft replica pistols.
RCMP said a total of 49 firearms were seized — 12 classified as restricted, 10 classified as prohibited. “A number of prohibited devices were seized, such as magazines capable of holding more than the permitted number of rounds,” the RCMP said. “The majority of restricted or prohibited firearms were not registered.” The suspect was held for a bail hearing on charges of:
Firearm demonstration. Use of a firearm in the commission of an offence. Unsafe storage of firearm. Carrying a concealed weapon. Possession of a prohibited weapon knowing it to be unauthorized. Unauthorized possession of a prohibited device.
He was released on the condition that he appear in court. RCMP said after the search of his home, additional charges are expected.
