Ricky Gervais has defended James Corden after he said the TV host “stole” one of his jokes. The actor, writer and comedian shared a clip from Corden’s Late Late Show that saw him discuss Elon Musk’s recent acquisition of Twitter. During the segment, Corden says, “When you see Elon Musk talking about Twitter, he does this thing where he goes, ‘Well, it’s the town square.’ But it’s not, ’cause if somebody puts a poster in a town square that says, ‘Guitar lessons available,’ you’re not going to make people in town go, ‘I don’t want to play guitar! I want you to play the piano, you piece of s***!” Corden continued: “It’s like, ‘That sign wasn’t for you — it was for somebody else. You don’t need to be angry about all this.” On Tuesday (November 1), The Office and After Life star Gervais shared the video in a now-deleted tweet, writing: “The stuff about the town square ad for guitar lessons is amazing.” Showing he didn’t care, Gervais added a laughing emoji. The comedian’s followers immediately knew Gervais was referring to the fact that he made the exact same joke in the stand-up Ricky Gervais Humanity on Netflix in 2018. Many shared the clip of Gervais telling the joke “word for word.” However, it was quickly pointed out by Gervais that Corden’s team likely wrote the joke, suggesting that Corden was unaware of the situation. “You didn’t give it like you did though,” one fan replied to Gervais, adding: “I guess he asked to use that joke?” To this, Gervais replied: “I doubt he would knowingly copy such a famous stand-up routine word for word like that.” Ricky Gervais points out that James Corden “stole” one of his jokes (Twitter) Others called out Corden for the “scandalous” joke theft, with many expressing surprise at how similar the wording was. The Independent has contacted Gervais and Corden for comment. Last week, Corden teased his imminent return to the UK after his final Late Late Show episode aired in the summer of 2023.
