With Aaron Judge at 60 home runs on the season — tying Babe Ruth’s all-time high, and one shy of Maris’ American League and steroid-free single-season record — the Maris guys were at Yankee Stadium Thursday night to take the team’s game against the Red Sox.
And what seemed inevitable recently, Judge tied their father’s record of 61 years.
“It’s mixed emotions,” Maris’ son, Roger Jr., said on Fox’s pregame show. “We want to see Aaron do really well. We want to see him have a big night tonight, hopefully, and a big night the rest of the week and finish the year strong.
“Again, we like the record, we’re proud of the record, but I think it’s kind of inevitable, he’s probably going to break it at this point with the way he’s hitting the ball, the way he’s been hitting the ball the last couple of weeks . We’re not expecting the record at the end of the year, but congratulations to Aaron on the year he’s had and I certainly wish him the best of luck.”
Maris, who died in 1985, shares some similarities with Judge in their public temperament.

Everything you need to know about Aaron Judge and his pursuit of the home run record:
And if he could keep track of Judge, he’d have the same feeling driving past New York right now.
“He would have loved Judge,” Roger Jr. said. “I don’t know how much you know about dad, but if you look at the two of them and you look at dad’s career, and you go to Judge’s career, their demeanor and the way they handled the press and the way they do different things. They’re just low-key guys. Team first guys, all about winning, all about doing the right thing. We come into the game well prepared, we try to win games and we try to win a championship. I think he’d love to see Aaron do what he’s doing.”

One of Maris’ other sons, Kevin, was asked how they wanted their father to be remembered once his name is imminently relegated to the history books
He may soon no longer hold the record, but he will forever be woven into MLB history.
“The cool thing about it is that he’ll be remembered for hanging out with Judge and Beba Ruth,” Kevin Maris said. “And those are two of the best ballplayers in the game.”
