Storm Claudio is set to bring gusts of up to 70mph with heavy rain to parts of southern England. The Met Office issued a yellow warning for southerly wind until 8am on Tuesday, saying the weather could cause disruption. As well as strong winds, people across much of England and Wales are facing heavy rain as an additional yellow warning is in place until 8am on Tuesday, bringing the risk of flooding and travel disruption. The eastward movement of Storm Claudio on Tuesday is expected to leave a day of showers for much of the UK, with Wales and areas in southern and central England forecast to see the heaviest downpours, the Met Office added. Neil Armstrong, chief meteorologist, said: “The biggest impact from Storm Claudio is expected in northern France, which is why it has been named as a system by Meteo-France. “What it means for us in the UK is strong winds across much of the south coast of England. “Some isolated and highly exposed coastal areas could see gusts in excess of 70 mph, while much of the warning area will see gusts between 50 and 60 mph.” Britons have been warned to expect a wet start to Tuesday (Met Office) The Met Office said winds were likely to be strongest along coastal areas of the Irish Sea, including west Wales, north-west England and south-west Scotland, as well as the east coast of Northern Ireland. It has also issued a yellow wind warning for Wednesday. Deputy Chief Meteorologist Stephen Keats said: “Within the warning area, gusts of between 55 and 65mph are expected. This is associated with low pressure moving into the north west of the UK, bringing with it heavy rain on Wednesday, especially in parts of south west Scotland, Cumbria and west Wales, although much of the UK will see some rain during the day. “In addition to the strong winds in the warning area, many parts of the UK will experience strong and gale force winds, at least briefly, during Wednesday.” The stormy weather comes after the UK enjoyed above-average temperatures as October ended, with the mercury reaching 20 degrees in some places, making for calm conditions for this time of year.
