Locker! Stoinis ct Dockrell b Little 35 (Australia 160-5)

Lost! Stoinis carves Ligo to back point. Another “impact” innings from the big man. Mathew Wade is the new batter. 18th over: Australia 158-4 (Stoinis 35, David 3) Ireland hit back – Dockrell in and out, bowling an over for just three runs. He finishes 0-24 from his four. Two to go…

Locker! Finch ct Adair b McCarthy 63

The skipper looked tired and eventually holed out to long on, but 63 off 44 balls will keep his detractors quiet. Tim David is the new batter and he’s out right away. McCarthy ends his tenure with 3-29 from four overs. 17th over: Australia 155-4 (Stoinis 34, David 1) 16th over: Australia 145-3 (Finch 57, Stoinis 31) Stoinis brings a drive to covers and is almost caught but Delany can’t but the fielder can’t quite hang on to the forward dive. Difficult opportunity. Dockrell is milked for one and two before Finch drives hard for a six down the ground. Eleven runs out, Australians in the category. It could be a punishing last four overs for Ireland. Updated at 09:29 GMT 15th over: Australia 134-3 (Finch 50, Stoinis 27) Adair has ended a nightmare. As if to annoy/make Michael Keane look like a T20 Nostradamus, he loses his radar and sends an agonizing five wides into the over. That’s the least of his worries… the over goes for 26 all out as Stoinis smashes two fours and Finch twists for four before bringing up his fifty with a swatted six off a full toss off the final ball. Australia in the lead and Ireland down the stretch for the first time in the match. “As I was saying…” emails Mystic Meg Mike. Updated at 09:29 GMT 14th over: Australia 108-3 (Finch 40, Stoinis 16) Stoinis plays a powerful straight drive off Delaney to take Australia’s first boundary in almost three overs (17 balls). He follows it up with a pull for a few more and then hits a six. Sixteen runs from the over help the Aussies’ cause. Michael Keane emails a bugbear: “Jim, nice for those of us back home that Ireland are playing at a civilized time, although the 5am kick-offs were worth it. But how wide have we bolted? It’s absolutely crazy, especially from our sailors who are otherwise pretty good. Maybe a little short for the Gabba, but overall dangerous and tight. I felt the wides (and not Moeen Ali) almost cost us against England and we didn’t help ourselves today.” I’m making it seven wide so far from Ireland, which isn’t too bad in the grand scheme of things, but as always every run counts in this format. Updated at 09:29 GMT 13th over: Australia 92-3 (Finch 38, Stoinis 3) McCarthy has been fantastic tonight. His last over goes for five and he is 2-19 from his three so far. Ireland keep the pressure on Australia here. Updated at 09:29 GMT Away from the Gamba for a second – this is pretty dark and disturbing: 12th over: Australia 87-3 (Finch 34, Stoinis 1) Just three runs from Dockerill’s second over as Australia make a mini-rebuild after Maxwell’s departure. George Dockrell was thought by many to be underrated for Ireland in recent years for Ireland. He took 1-15 in 3 overs against England and Australia. Very useful complement to his power hit. another player who could find his way onto the franchise track — Tim Wigmore (@timwig) October 31, 2022 Updated at 09:30 GMT

Locker! Maxwell ct Tucker b Little 13 (Australia 84-3)

Josh Little is back after the isotonic warts. Finch drives him away for cover for four, before a single brings Maxwell on strike. The Little One sends one whistling around his ears and then takes his next ball! A full, wide and fast ball is clipped by Maxwell and the meaty wicket flies to Tucker behind the woodwork. Marcus Stoinis is the new man, he marbled Sri Lanka the other night to get over his line. Crucial runs are needed from him here as well. The youngster keeps him honest with his first ball, a defending dot. 11th over: Australia 84-3 (Finch 34, Stoinis 0) Updated at 09:30 GMT This made me laugh: Nasser Hussain on Halloween: “I can’t understand what it’s all about to be honest.” Bloke rarely misses — Will Macpherson (@willis_macp) October 31, 2022 10th over: Australia 78-2 (Finch 27, Maxwell 13) Maxwell tries to paddle Delaney and is given away by umpire Menon, but he immediately assesses with a confident smile. Sure enough the replay shows he left the ball under the edge on the backboard and the decision is overturned. Next ball another big shout for lbw off a switch hit, Ireland step up this time but the decision remains with Maxwell. Ireland are in this game, Delaney gets frustrated as he fires at the ball on a flat trajectory. Help to Maxwell who takes one in the slot off the final ball and smacks it back down the ground for a six. Event passed, ten gone – time for a drink. 9th over: Australia 68-2 (Finch 27, Maxwell 7) Eight runs and a wicket from the ninth over as Glenn Maxwell leaves the crease. He is into it straight away, hitting three twos to keep his players and captain busy. Updated at 08:48 GMT

Locker! Marsh ct Tucker b McCarthy 28 (Australia 60-2)

McCarthy has a brace, not a great shot from Marsh, who leans back on a clipped shot and toe-finishes the delivery past the keeper. 8th over: Australia 60-1 (Finch 27, Marsh 28) Dockrell for a twirl and then the batters are keen to work him and get one and two. Seven from the over and the fifty partnership between Marsh and Finch. 7th over: Australia 53-1 (Finch 24, Marsh 24) Fifteen runs plundered by Fionn Hand. Mitch Marsh hits a brutal shot into the second tier of the stadium behind midwicket – a 102m shot. And another one! Six more! Marsh is happy to slide across the line and hands over for another maximum. Ireland need one here, this was a momentum shifted over TM. 6th over: Australia 38-1 (Finch 23, Marsh 11) Marsh gets four down the ground by Gareth Delaney, but the spinner recovers well, blasting for five dots in a row. Powerplay done. How do you see this going? Another finger chewing minion? As always, send us your thoughts, theories, and general thoughts. 5th over: Australia 34-1 (Finch 23, Marsh 7) Finch already looking more fluent tonight, nails a slugged SIX off Adair that flies deep into the Gabba crowd, a sound of the bat echoing through the Brisbane night. The Australian skipper then steps up again to take another four. Fourteen away for Australia. 4th over: Australia 20-1 (Finch 11, Marsh 6) Little comes back and keeps a lid on things, Finch takes a cut for four to help him but Ireland are tight on the pitch, six runs from the over over. 3rd over: Australia 14-1 (Finch 5, Marsh 6) Mitch Marsh is the new man in and he swivel-pulls away his first ball for four. No shooters needed. Decent from McCarthy though, six runs and a Warner wicket.

Locker! Warner ct Adair b McCarthy 3 (Australia 8-1)

Lost! Warner paddles Barry McCarthy straight to Adair on ’45*. Ireland is dynamic. Davey Dubya can’t believe what he’s done, but he needs to get off the field. *Brow from… catcher 2nd over: Australia 8-0 (Warner 3, Finch 5) The wonderfully mustachioed Mark Adair takes a full ball to get away from Finch, who pulled a couple of trots on the pitch. Great ball but no dice, going over the edge. A few more runs are added but Warner is frustrated to miss a full toss outside the off stump, smashes it to Dockrell at covers who makes a fine stop to save a certain boundary. Updated at 08:36 GMT 1st over: Australia 5-0 (Warner 1, Finch 4) Relatively subdued first over, five runs from it. Little gets a decent bounce and the two batters get in the eye. Right, so there you go. Anyone else excited to see Josh Little come in and be among the Aussie batting up? David Warner is yet to make his mark in this tournament and Finch looked woefully out of sorts in his last game against Sri Lanka, scoring 31 off 42 balls. He accepted (but not medium – lol) any criticism – calling the innings an “anomaly”. The little one has the ball in his hand, let’s play! Updated at 08.03 GMT The teams start for the anthems, there is plenty of time to catch up on yesterday’s games. More… events that will happen in this World Cup: Team’s: Ireland have the same squad as they did for England and there is one change for Australia, Adam Zaba returns after his bout with Covid, replacing Ashton Agar. Australia: 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch (c), 3 Mitchell Marsh, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Tim David, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh Hazlewood Ireland: 1 Paul Stirling, 2 Andy Balbirnie (c), 3 Lorcan Tucker (wk), 4 Harry Tector, 5 Curtis Campher, 6 George Dockrell, 7 Gareth Delany, 8 Mark Adair, 9 Fionn Hand, 10 Barry McCarthy, 11 Josh A little bit. Ireland won the toss and will bowl first. Andy Balbirnie calls right and sticks the Aussies. Finch confirms to Isa Guha that he would have done the same. Team news is forthcoming, in the meantime, here’s a snapshot of the latest action: Updated at 07:40 GMT Good news – It’s not raining! Adam Gilchrist roams the green countryside of the Gamba in a blue jacket under clear skies. What more could you want on a Monday morning/evening? Dump your inbox…

Preamble

James Wallace Hello and welcome to the OBO of a ccccrunch World Cup T20 game between Australia and Ireland. Jim here with the call, along with the lark in London, premium Colombian coffee beans on the go and I’m giddy to see what this exciting World Cup has in store next. After Friday’s game between the hosts and England, things in Group 1 are more crowded than the kitchen of a house party being held in a Sardine studio apartment (did I mention it’s…
