Halton District Police said a golfer spotted what he thought was a corpse floating in a river crossing the Royal Ontario Golf Course on Trafalgar Street in Milton at about 1 p.m.
When police arrived at the golf course, police said they confirmed the presence of a corpse inside the Sixteen Mile Middle Creek, which flows from Lake Ontario to Milton.
Const. Ryan Anderson told reporters at the scene that it was not clear exactly where the body came from or how long it had been in the creek as the water was moving “fast enough” at the time of the discovery.
“I can tell you that there appear to be some signs of exposure to the data,” Anderson said.
The body has not yet been removed from the creek and Anderson said the Halton Police Naval Unit, along with the Peel Police Naval Unit and the diving team, will be present at the scene.
The golf course is still open, but the hole where the body was found is closed as the search is ongoing.
Members of the public in the area will have to wait to see an increased police presence.
A spokesman for the Royal Ontario Golf Club told CTV News Toronto they had no comment.
