It’s a great day at Grand Falls-Windsor. The county officially handed over possession of the Grand Falls House, a mansion of a centuries-old mansion and its surrounding estate in the city for development as a tourist attraction. The mansion was built in 1909 by Alfred and Harold Harmsworth and was part of the real estate built to serve the old paper mill, which helped build the town of Grand Falls. The Tudor Revival-style home remained vacant for years when Abitibi Consolidated closed and the province expropriated the company’s assets in 2008. The Grand Falls House Foundation was founded shortly afterwards in an effort to acquire ownership of the property and develop its tourism potential. The president of the Foundation, Peggy Bartlett, says that she is happy that they will finally be able to start the necessary work to bring the property, which is the pride of Grand Falls-Windsor, back to the residents of the city. Now, he says, the real work begins.
