MUST SEE: Canada’s November forecast: Winter weather is coming

Weekend and beyond: The winter pattern tightens its grip

Rounds of snow coming this weekend and early next week will keep the province locked in a wintry pattern. Cold arctic air will sink south into the region this weekend and linger into next week, with temperatures dropping into the -20s, possibly even nearing the -30s in some spots, for much of Alberta. RELATED: Why the first snowfall of the season can catch drivers by surprise “Temperatures next week will be cold by January standards!” says Kelly Sonnenburg, meteorologist at The Weather Network. “Daily highs will be about 10 degrees cooler than normal early January daytime highs.”

There will be no shortage of snowfall

A new system will spawn east of the Rockies Friday night, spreading widespread snow across Alberta by Saturday and into Sunday morning. Early next week, another low developing over Montana will spread additional snow across the southern half of the state. At the same time, Arctic high pressure will move south, ushering in cold temperatures and wind chills in the -20s. RELATED: Slow commute in Calgary as snow snarls traffic

“After prolonged summer-like temperatures ushered in Alberta’s fall season, a flip of a switch sent the province into freefall into deep winter-like weather,” adds Sonnenburg. Be sure to check back for the latest weather updates across Alberta.
